Perhaps more than in any other European city, the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela is the beating heart of Santiago. As the final destination for countless pilgrims walking the Camino de Santiago, this immense Baroque masterpiece, steeped in legend and tradition, stands just a 15-minute walk from the train station — a far shorter journey than the one many have taken to reach it.
The Praza do Obradoiro, the city’s main square, is home to the cathedral and an impressive ensemble of grand buildings in various architectural styles. Among them are the ornate Catholic Kings Hostel (Hostal dos Reis Católicos), originally built to care for weary pilgrims, and the majestic Rajoy Palace, now serving as the city hall.
Nearby, Praza das Praterías, with its elegant central fountain, offers one of the most iconic views of the cathedral. Just a three-minute walk from Praza do Obradoiro lies the imposing Monastery of San Martiño Pinario, another emblematic Baroque religious landmark.
The Mercado de Abastos, Santiago’s second most-visited attraction, is located just a few streets east of the central square. One of the largest markets in Spain, it’s the ideal place to discover and taste fresh, high-quality Galician produce.
The lively Rúa do Franco, one of the main streets leading to the cathedral, is lined with welcoming bars and excellent restaurants. As night falls, this vibrant university city comes to life, and you can experience its spirited nightlife in the many bars and clubs scattered throughout the Old Town.

An airport bus departs every 30 minutes from Santiago de Compostela Airport to the Railway Station, located just south of the city center, and operates daily. The route includes several stops, including one at Praza de Galicia, right in the city center.
The total journey from the airport terminal to the railway station takes about 35 minutes.
Tickets can be purchased directly from the driver, and a single fare is €1.00.
From the trainstation
Located just south of Santiago de Compostela’s historic center, the main train station offers a welcoming and convenient gateway to Galicia’s capital. Originally inaugurated in 1873, the station has been extensively renovated to accommodate the regular regional, medium-distance, and long-distance rail services connecting Santiago with the rest of Spain.
The historic city center is easily reachable on foot from the station, taking just a short walk. However, for travelers carrying heavy luggage, the C2 bus line provides a quick and comfortable connection to the city center and other key locations.
